Searching in the Wrong Places

L. C. FOX-SMITH - 03/06/25: I’ve been thinking about Acts 17:22-24 the last couple of days:

‘Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars' hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious. For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you. God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;’

Even though God was all around them, the Gentiles kept turning to false gods instead. Today is no different. People are still searching for meaning in all kinds of places - careers, relationships, and the latest trends. But these things can’t truly satisfy. If we keep looking for fulfilment in empty places, we’ll end up empty ourselves.

But even in these empty places, we can still catch glimpses of God: in the beauty of creation, in the quiet call of our conscience, and in the sense of right and wrong that’s written on our hearts. I feel like God is inviting us to follow these bread crumbs. We are gently encouraged to move from those empty spaces into the only place where we’ll ever find true fulfilment: in Him.

I’ve certainly looked in the wrong places most of my life and only recently learned that through prayer, devotion and reading my Bible, I can find the hope, love, and purpose I’ve really been searching for.

Could God be leaving breadcrumbs in your life, quietly inviting you to find Him?
