Speak To The Earth, And It Shall Teach Thee

L. C. FOX-SMITH - 26/05/25: I’ve been watching some basil seeds sprout into life over the past couple of weeks; it’s been awesome to watch! Today I looked for a passage that would be good to reflect on what I’ve been seeing. I read Psalm 104 but loved Job chapter 12, especially the passage 12:7-10:

“But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee: Or speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee: and the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee. Who knoweth not in all these that the hand of the LORD hath wrought this? In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind.”

When I look at the small seedlings on my kitchen windowsill, I am in awe of what God is doing all around us. He is so powerful yet so gentle. He nurtures these tiny herbs, breathing them into life and coaxing them out of their shells. Then I look up and see birds flying across the field, incredible greenery growing on the hills and hedgerows, and clouds painting pictures across the sky.

How dull is it that science has taken a beautiful and miraculous process and explained it away in such boring and uninspiring ways? The explanations don’t give us any answers to where the initial spark of life came from. The charts and diagrams take away the wonder and diminish the tiny miracles that are happening all around us. But not today!

I praise God for the miracle of life, the beauty of creation and his sustaining hand in everything that grows around us. I thank Him for filling my heart with awe and wonder this morning.

What are you in awe of today?
